Mehmet has a PhD in Organization Studies. In recent years his main research focus has been on the social and organizatonal aspects of IT innovation in general, and open source software communities in particular. Based on structural features of organizing and knowledge exchange, his studies are concerned with nature and efficiency of collaboration in knowledge creation and transfer across individuals and firms; with cases in software development and similar practices in virtual communities.
After a training in Physics (1986-1989), Electrical and Electronics Engineering (1986-1994), and Developmental Economics (1995-1996), he has practiced software development and management at private companies in Turkey and US (1994-2001). Soon after joining the Computer Science department at Istanbul Bilgi University in 2002 as a lecturer, he has started my PhD studies at the Social Sciences Institute’s Organization Studies programme in 2004, which he has finished in 2009.
After completing his education which included an MBA stint at Istanbul University’s Institute of Management Economics, he decided to start a career in advertising. Within the first three years, he realized that he was in the wrong position in the industry, and spent another two years to get out, mainly writing blogs. Just as he decided he was going to sit in a corner quietly and doing nothing, he was pushed into magazine publishing, where he realized that the Internet industry needed somebody like him. Along with being an editor, he networked and as a result, an entrepreneurial character sprouted in him. He is currently a freelance editor in magazine publishing, meanwhile, spending countless hours to be a valuable contributor to the dotcom developments in Turkey through his start-ups.
